How to make your phone boring

A boring phone is one you pick up for a reason and put down when you are done. These steps take about 20 minutes and work on any phone.

1. Turn off almost every notification

Keep notifications only from people: calls, messages, and your calendar. Turn off everything else, including news, shopping and social apps.

Also turn off badges (the red dots with numbers). Badges are built to make you tap.

2. Switch to greyscale

Apps use bright colours to catch your eye. Grey makes them dull.

3. Strip the home screen

Keep only tools on your first screen: messages, phone, camera, maps, notes, calendar. Move every feed-based app off the home screen and out of the dock.

4. Log out of feeds in your browser

If you delete an app but stay logged in on Safari or Chrome, the habit moves to the browser. Log out, or block the sites in Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing.

5. Add a pause before noisy apps

This is the step most guides skip, and the one that matters most. Hiding an app does not remove the urge. When you search for it and tap it, you need a moment to decide.

QuietOS does this. When you open a noisy app, it asks how long do you want? You pick 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes. When the time is up, the app closes.

6. Charge your phone outside the bedroom

Buy a cheap alarm clock. The first and last scroll of the day are the hardest to stop, and the easiest to remove.

7. Give it two weeks

The first few days feel strange. You will reach for your phone out of habit and find nothing there. That empty moment is the point. Most people find the reach fades within two weeks.

Questions

What does it mean to make your phone boring?

It means removing the colour, noise and easy access that make you pick up your phone without a reason, so you use it on purpose.

Does greyscale really reduce screen time?

Many people find greyscale makes feeds and games less appealing. It works best combined with fewer notifications and a simpler home screen.

Can I make an iPhone boring without deleting apps?

Yes. Remove apps from the home screen (they stay in the App Library), turn off notifications and badges, use greyscale, and add a pause before noisy apps with an app like QuietOS.
